Above 60% of the world’s oil production is used in transportation, by which more than 95% is powered by oil based fuels. An additional billion cars will be added to the world’s roads in the coming decade, increasing global dependence on oil in transportation.

The Oil-Free Initiative aims to position Israel as a global leader in energy R&D and as a catalyst for the worldwide adoption of oil alternatives, in order to reduce the global consumption of oil in transportation.

With an ambitious 10-year government plan and a budget of $400 million, the initiative includes a focus on both the supply and the demand aspects of the market, under its main components:

Position Israel as a global leader in innovation for oil-alternative technologies.
Promote Israel as a global test bed for innovative solutions of alternative transportation.
Create local incentives for implementation of innovative oil-alternative technologies in the Israeli market.
Support global projects by using Israeli technologies and know-how.
Produce clear advocacy for policies and action using the diplomatic corps, creating global change.

The main clusters of oil alternative technologies categorized by the Israeli government are:
1. Biofuels, including agrotech solutions.
2. Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage including smart grid solutions for charging.
3. Natural Gas and Synthetic Fuels as transportation fuel and as a source for liquid fuels.
4. Engines, Composite Materials and Other Technologies, including improvement of the power-train.
