Amid a prolonged period of conflict, Israel has continued to empower its reservists to shape its future through innovation and entrepreneurship.
Over the past three years, more than 300,000 Israeli reservists have been called up for military service, creating significant disruption to their personal and professional lives. For many, extended tours of duty have delayed careers, interrupted businesses and placed immense pressure on families. Yet, through a specialised entrepreneurship program known as 18X Elite Impact, many IDF reservists are now transforming their military experience into new business ventures.
The program recently marked its first anniversary by unveiling 150 startups founded by IDF reservists. Collectively, these ventures have raised more than US$15 million in venture capital and non-dilutive funding, equating to an average of approximately US$100,000 per company. These funds are helping early-stage ventures move from proof of concept to minimum viable product development.
The startups span several critical sectors, including cyber, artificial intelligence, dual-use defence technology and other areas of advanced innovation. During the program’s anniversary summit in Tel Aviv, 12 selected startups presented their companies to an audience of venture capitalists, technology executives, government officials and industry leaders. The program has also supported more than 1,000 reservists over the past year.
At the heart of 18X Elite Impact is the idea that the qualities developed through military service, can be redirected into entrepreneurship. The program operates as a high-level incubator, connecting reservists with experienced entrepreneurs, investors and business mentors who help turn early-stage ideas into scalable companies.
The success of the initiative highlights a broader feature of Israel’s innovation economy. Even during periods of instability, Israel continues to cultivate entrepreneurs who are able to operate under pressure, adapt quickly and solve complex problems. It appears the mantra of Israel is perfectly encapsulated in the notion that battlefield leadership can become commercial innovation, national resilience and economic growth.
As global uncertainty continues to loom over the world, Israel continues to choose sheer perseverance over any alternative. Australia could greatly benefit from the fruit of Israel’s expansive tech ecosystem, so we too can avoid the ramifications of not adapting to our environment.
