Why Israel Sits at the Forefront of Medical Technology Innovation

There is an old biblical saying that can be interpreted as: “Whoever saves a single life is considered by scripture to have saved the world.” It is a belief in the sanctity of life, most applicable to an identified person rather than a generalized population. Now consider the Israeli University Professor at medical school researching the unknown, commercializing their technology and distributing products and services all around the World. In Israel, they don’t just think, they do. That is the beauty of the Israeli innovation mindset and why Israel sits at the forefront of medical technology innovation as “The Startup Nation”.

In recent years, the Israeli industry has gained a leading position in the global digital health sector. The ground-breaking technologies developed in Israel provide a comprehensive response to the most pressing needs of the current era: consultation, monitoring and remote medical diagnosis, health system management, medical information accessibility for the public, prevention and early diagnosis of diseases, and more.

What is the secret sauce that Israel has, which helps to develop ecosystems? It’s the trickle-down intertwined connectivity between University and Professor, Professor and Industry, Industry and Hospital, Hospital and Professor in the Industry using commercialized technology developed in the University; which, might we add, is positively encouraged and supported by the Israeli Government through innovation grants by the Israel Innovation Authority, to mention but one scheme.

The Sheba Tel HaShomer Medical Centre in Israel, which is constantly rated among the World’s top 10 hospitals, actively implements many cutting-edge medical technologies and then disseminates said technologies through its ARC network. Their program runs approximately 20 to 30 startups each year and operates a large digital health innovation fund in conjunction with a local leading venture capital firm.

“Sheba” is not alone in this practice. Tel Aviv Souarsky Medical Centre Ichilov has its Research, Development & Innovation Centre responsible for promoting, facilitating and coordinating translational research in all fields of relevance to patient health and wellness.

Rabin Medical Centre Beilinson’s CEO encourages staff to fight difficult problems and to think as creatively and as far as possible, meeting with their internal innovation team coming from the fields of AI, big data and 3D printing.

Rambam Health Care Campus has an innovation centre promoting and enabling novel technology developments and acts as the tertiary referral centre to 12 district hospitals.

The Hadassah Medical Centre has Kivunim – the innovative centre to centralise all the information essential to patients and their families.

Now multiply the aforementioned technological implementation effect with the Artificial Intelligence revolution and how high-speed computing power increases research and development. Using this for good and in the medical world positively exacerbates medical efficiency and point of care.

Here are some of the exemplary Israeli technologies on the cutting edge of startup to scaleup currently looking for global export partners; we encourage you to reach out to the local Israel Trade and Economic Mission for introductions with them to discuss how you can help save, or even simply improve, but a single life.
